Little Swanport Catchment Management Plan Implementation Committee win National Landcare Award
25 June 2010: Tasmania's Little Swanport Catchment Management Plan Implementation Committee (LSCMPIC) has been announced winner of the prestigious Toshiba Community Group Award at the 2010 National Landcare Awards for the work with a wide range of natural resource management projects in the region.
The Awards, held at Parliament House last night, celebrate the work of volunteers from around Australia who are making a significant contribution to the environment.
Catriona Rowntree hosted the bi-annual Awards in front of 600 guests including The Hon. Tony Burke MP, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and actor Jack Thompson.
The ongoing activities of the LSCMPIC has provided many opportunities for members and local land managers to communicate, encourage, share and learn from the knowledge and actions of a broad variety of stakeholders from both within and outside the catchment.
Projects have included fencing of riparian land and priority remnant vegetation such as saltmarsh, and engaging the community in water quality monitoring activities.
"We're honoured to receive this Award and are proud to be part of Australia's Landcare movement," said Helen Scott, Chairperson.
"This is tremendous for the catchment - a big boost after drought and what we've been through over the last few years."
Heather Campbell, CEO Landcare Australia added, "The Awards are a culmination of the ongoing efforts of volunteers across Australia who dedicate their time working to sustain and enhance Australia's natural resources.
"I congratulate Little Swanport Catchment Management Plan Implementation Committee on this truly remarkable achievement."

WEEDY AWARD WINNERS
The Glamorgan Spring Bay Council was the clear winner of the local government award for weed action at the Annual General Meeting of the Tasmanian Weed Society held in March. The Council was nominated by Sandy Leighton, Weed Strategy Coordinator for the Southern Tasmanian Councils Authority. Council and the our Natural Resource Management Committee work in partnership with many individuals and community members to implement the Glamorgan Spring Bay Weed Management Plan. Over the last five years activities range from on ground weed control of priority weeds on public and private land, to training for Council works crew in weed identification and machinery hygiene, to a range of communication activities such as participation in Weed Buster Week and preparation and distribution of weed identification information. Priority weeds that we are working towards eradicating include Serrated Tussock, Patterson's Curse, Boneseed and Spanish Heath. Council's participation in the Catchments To Coast program has resulted in an significant amount of weed control in coastal reserves throughout the Municipality. Instead of a trophy Council was pleased to receive a copy of the fantastic weed identification book ' Weeds Of the South East - An Identification Guide for Australia'. This will be a great addition to our reference library.
